UN envoy urges immediate ceasefire, civilian rule in Sudan

January 19, 2024 (KAMPALA) – In a strong appeal to end Sudan’s ongoing conflict, United Nations Special Envoy Ramtane Lamamra called on warring parties to immediately cease hostilities and negotiate for a return to civilian rule.

Speaking at an extraordinary summit of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) on Sudan in Kampala, Uganda, Lamamra highlighted the urgent need for a peaceful resolution to the conflict, which has displaced millions and devastated the country.

“The first step must be, therefore, an enforceable and closely monitored national cessation of hostilities that forms the basis for a lasting peace,” Lamamra stated.

Lamamra emphasized that the war has also posed serious threats to the unity and territorial integrity of Sudan, as well as to the security and stability of the region and beyond.

He urged the IGAD leaders to continue their efforts to facilitate a ceasefire and called for a unified and coherent international mediation process to support the Sudanese people in ending the conflict.

“We as the international community can and must join efforts to support the Sudanese towards this noble objective,” Lamamra said.

The UN envoy’s statement echoed the sentiments of many Sudanese who have expressed their desire for peace and a return to civilian rule.

In conclusion, Lamamra reiterated that only the Sudanese people themselves can bring an end to this war. However, he affirmed the international community’s commitment to supporting their efforts towards a peaceful resolution.

This was the first meeting in Sudan that the Algerian diplomat attended in his capacity as the UN Secretary-General Envoy for Sudan. Also, before this meeting, he was in Cairo and Port Sudan to explore the positions of the Egyptian and Sudanese officials.
