A Letter from a Fur woman to Sudan
By Ahmed Elzobier
August 13, 2008 — To my country who has deserted me,
I love you, please return.
*****
My story is painful, but simple and short
I lived peacefully under the mountain shade,
The extended valley in front of me, mountains behind,
I felt eternally safe, living in tranquility, content,
Never knowing hatred or grief,
*****
I love all people,
My home was an oasis,
For the lost, the wonderer, and the bereaved,
They came from everywhere,
Before the avalanche my Son
I dreamt that one day I would be The Sudan
What happened, you asked?
*****
On a bleak day
From the grave of hatred,
Emerged a wolf intent on killing my dream
He plotted, schemed, haunted my days and nights
He killed my children and my trees
*****
Burned my hut then fled,
He stole my dream,
No one cared, no one knows
Because no one dared speak up for me
I still have the dream to become The Sudan
*****
I screamed loudly, please save me,
I sent letters from my death bed,
Screaming please save me………..
No one cared, they were fast asleep
But I still have my dream to become The Sudan
*****
Before it is too late,
Before they destroy my innocence,
Before this place disappears,
Before they rape me, take my virginity,
Before I lose my sanity, please save me,
Please, please cry with me, my Country
To preserve the dream that one day I will become The Sudan.
