Sudan’s SPLM unveils roadmap to counter ICC move
August 13, 2008 (KHARTOUM) — A high ranking Sudan People’s Liberation Movement official unveiled the content of a roadmap presented by his party to the National Congress Party to block the indictment of Sudanese president by the prosecutor of the International Criminal Court.
Speaking to the London based Asharq Al-Awsat, the official said the SPLM roadmap consists of two separated approaches judiciary and political. From one hand the NCP partner calls to try inside the country people who are involved in Darfur crimes under international supervision and taking serious steps to negotiate a political solution with Darfur rebels.
The SPLM proposals also include the reunification of Darfur rebel movements and to start direct talks with it to realise a lasting and fair peace in Darfur without excluding any party. The SPLM official stressed that political solution of the crisis is part of the solution for ICC crisis.
In a meeting held last Sunday August 10, the NCP and the SPLM said they agreed on the objectives and the mechanisms of an initiative launched by the Sudanese president to resolve Darfur conflict after a meeting with the different political forces on July 13.
“The People of Sudan’s Initiative” is aimed at finding a lasting political solution for Darfur crisis and intends to bring justice for Darfur people, fight the violence and to restore security in the region.
It also should adopt a plan to reconstruct and develop the economy of the three states in Darfur and to address the humanitarian situation there announced former south Darfur governor Al-Haj Atta Al Mannan last Sunday after a meeting of the NCP-SPLM committee.
The SPLM official said there are no difference between the People of Sudan’s initiative and the SPLM roadmap adding a joint committee is formed to draw up a structural framework and timetable for the implementation of the initiative which is expected to take place by the end of the year.
He also said that Darfur Peace Agreement signed in 2006 in Abuja remains incomplete and needs to be accomplished by implementing the demands of the Darfur people and putting an end to the war in the province.
He pointed out the possibility of the international support for the Sudanese initiative “if it felt the government and all the other parties were taking serious steps.”
