Al-Burhan, al-Sissi discuss ways to end Sudanese conflict.
February 29, 2024 (CAIRO) – Sudanese Sovereign Council Chairman Abdel Fattah al-Burhan visited Cairo for talks with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi. The leaders discussed solutions to end the conflict in Sudan and ways to support Sudanese refugees who have fled the violence since April.
Al-Burhan’s visit is the second since the conflict began between the army and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). In August 2023, Egypt was his first foreign destination after his move from the army command headquarters in Khartoum four months earlier.
According to Egyptian presidential spokesman Ahmed Fahmy, al-Sisi and al-Burhan discussed “developments in Sudan and ongoing efforts to resolve the crisis in a way that ensures stability and preserves the sovereignty and unity of the Sudanese state.”
Fahmy added that al-Sisi expressed Egypt’s readiness to continue supporting Sudan’s stability and peace process.
For its part, the Sovereign Council of Sudan stated that al-Burhan shared with al-Sisi “the Sudanese government’s vision for ending the war and achieving peace and stability in Sudan.”
Egypt, along with Bahrain, hosted a secret meeting between senior military leaders from the warring parties in Manama, with participation from Saudi and American mediators, aiming to end the war that has lasted for more than ten months.
The Sovereign Council’s statement also said that al-Sisi pledged to “provide Sudanese in Egypt with the same access to education, healthcare, and residency procedures as Egyptians.”
About 450,000 Sudanese have arrived in Egypt since the war started. The Egyptian government has implemented visa and residency regulations for Sudanese arrivals.
