Sudanese army conduct exercises with heavy weapons near Khartoum

August 20, 2008 (KHARTOUM) — The Sudanese army warned today Khartoum state population to keep away from a military area in Khartoum state saying it would conduct exercises with heavy artillery.

The Sudanese army issued today a warning to Khartoum state’s population urging them to keep away from the military zone of Jabbal Al-Markhiyat in Omdurman.

The Official SUNA, said these exercises would take place on Thursday from 06:00 am to 06:00 pm.

Since last May raid by a Darfur rebel movement, Justice and Equality Movement, the Sudanese authorities are rethinking the defence of the capital and operated several joint military exercises.

Also permanent military posts are established on the outlets around the capital.

Following the attack, the army had criticised the handing of the security and the protection of the capital by the security and intelligence services and requested to have the upper hand in the issue.
