Workers Union members tipped on health safety environment

Participants who attended the workshop organized by civil society coalition on natural resources [ST]

March 10, 2024 (JUBA) – 23 members of the Workers Trade Union of Petroleum and Mining (WTUPM) in South Sudan successfully completed a two-day workshop on strengthening the leadership of workers by training them on health safety environment and their roles in oil and mining sector.

The workshop was organized in collaboration with the Civil Society Alliance on Natural Resources with support from the Norwegian Peoples Aid (NPA).

Charles Judo, the chairperson of the Civil Society Coalition on Natural Resources (CSCNR), said the training workshop was meant to increase awareness of Petroleum and Mining workers on their roles, health safety environment and the new human resources management as well as protection regulations.

Participants in the workshop expressed their satisfaction with the training and that they had been informed about health safety environment and human resources management and protection regulations, he explained.

The workshop, held in the country’s capital, Juba, discussed among others, the achievements, challenges and the way forward for the workers’ union in efforts to carryout activism for rights of workers in the oil and mining sector.

According to the organizers of the two-day workshop, strengthening the leadership capacity of workers’ trade union of petroleum and mining is the key towards amplifying the voices of the voiceless in the extractive industry.

WTUPM is an umbrella of workers in oil and mining industry of South Sudan.

The Workers Union membership comprises of the Ministry of Petroleum, Ministry of Mining, Nile Petroleum Corporation (Nilepet), SUDD-Services Company, SUDD Operating Company (SPOC) Dar-petroleum Operating Company (DPOC) and the Greater Pioneer Operating Company (GPOC).
