Southern Sudanese minister denies allegations of overpayment

August 22, 2008 (JUBA) — A minister in the government of southern Sudan dismissed accusation of overpaying his staff and violating civil services rules.

Minister of Legal Affairs and Constitutional Development in the Government of Southern Sudan, Michael Makuei, said on Friday that the salaries, in his ministry, are in line with the budget adding he will provide the lawmakers with all the necessary explanation this week.

The Minister of Labor and Public Service, Awut Deng, told the Southern Sudan Legislative Assembly on Wednesday August 13, that senior officials at the Ministry of Legal Affairs were receiving salaries six times higher than salaries that their colleagues at other ministries receive.

“The legal counsels paid themselves additional allowances without referring the matter to the Ministry of Labor (….) The undersecretary in grade one legal affairs gets SDG (Sudanese pounds) 18,640. Others get SDG 2,500. Counsel General in grade two gets SDG 15,550; others get SDG 2,375.”

James Wani, the speaker of southern Sudan parliament described these practices as “shocking and surprising”. He further pledged to investigate the issue.

While other MPs urged to summon the minister of legal to appear before the committees of Public Service and finance to explain the high salaries being paid to his staff.

    Wonders!!
Well, who is this old-head Awut Deng, complaining about the inter-ministry salary irregularities? Is she another emerging member of the so-called GKC ( for Gorial Kitchen Cabinet)? And by the way, what did she do about the corruption cases the hit hard the GKC, in which members like AKuin or so lost his job. Did she ask people like Akuin to pay back the money that he embezzled. If not, shut your big mouth Awut, because this seems to be the game; even your bosses Kiir, Machar and the rest know this…

I think paying staffs hugs amount of money without taking them to your family is not a crime is the part of rewarding people but taking public money for your own self like what Dr. Riek used to do is a corruption and that is machar wife is watchdog for him. If makuei is guilt that he had taken money from the ministry there will be no tribal protection because we need free Southern without people who are known of looting the public and they are still not satisfy with what they got. Anticorruption is Riek’s protection and is not going to work unless there is a change to remove Riek’s wife to open the way.
More information, Makuei is not there to serve any particularly interest and he is for the South and South has right to investigate him. Also if the staff found to be well pay than bear in mind that the money where allocate to his ministry and he has a right to budget what he got for the year and there should be no complaints at all. I never support corruptors or Traitors. By Ngwerajak

I think South Sudanese are asking themselves why everything malicious done by a Dinka leader is defense by other Dinkas by using language that implies a Dinka wrong doer did that because Dr. Riek is this and that with intention to defame Dr. Riek. what is the cause of this fear that is being covered? Is Dr.Riek running for presidency? just I am curious!

People you should understand that Awut has right to question anyone seem doing unlawful regardless of who the person is. Micheal is yes a leader and the number man in law (minister) but he is not above the law because none is. But he has to clear himself if the accuser is not ready to clear him, as Nyadeang did for Dr.Riek last week when reporters engaged in defaming Dr.Riek.

    Youngdinka:

Indeed your name affirms your supidity and likihood of giving childish opinions not only now but for your life.

praising somebody for committing crimes against state is very annoying and unacceptable at the same time. I have never heard a minister in the world who recieves $9000 a month in a poor nation like South Sudan where most of the people live with less than 20 cents (USd) a day.

Who is Makuei and what is your so called village apaat or rubbish. When have Makuei Lueth who was arrested in 1992 with late cdr Atali of Anyuak at Raat for tring to rebel against SPLA/M become very important person to the SPLA/M?

Please Youngjonkoth, if you don’t know Makuei just keep your mouth shut. In our southSudan, no one should be paid more for being in SPLA/M or not. Everybody must be paid based on his qualification and position in the government.

Youngjonkoth, go back to your village and dig your own garden because you are not good for politics.

I hope you welcome my advise.

    God bless.
