From women’s plight to peace: U.S. envoy vows action on Sudan crisis
March 11, 2024 (KAMPALA) U.S. Special Envoy to Sudan, Tom Perriello, affirmed on Monday that the American administration is dedicated to halting the conflict and reinstating democratic civilian governance in Sudan. He pledged continued efforts to achieve this goal.
During a meeting with a Sudanese women’s group in Kampala today, Perriello emphasized that his appointment reflects the United States’ deep concern for Sudan’s situation and its determination to end the conflict, particularly in light of the worsening situation for women and children.
Describing the current scenario as highly complex, Perriello stressed his deliberate choice to begin his engagements with women, recognizing them as the demographic most severely impacted by the conflict, enduring profound suffering in displacement and refugee camps.
Expressing outrage at the atrocities inflicted upon women and children, Perriello vowed to voice his condemnation during his forthcoming visits to African nations.
He underscored the global awareness regarding the plight of the Sudanese people, the threat posed by Islamist factions, and the severity of the humanitarian crisis, emphasizing the need for concerted efforts to compel all parties towards peace.
In a post after the meeting on X, Perriello underscored the role of women and youth grassroots groups in achieving change in their country “Sudan’s civilians must be the ones to define Sudan’s path going forward and lead a transition to democracy,” he added.
US Special Envoy Perriello is on a trip to Africa and the Middle East from March 11th to 23rd. This first tour after his appointment highlights the importance the US places on resolving the conflict in Sudan.
During his trip, Perriello will engage with a broad spectrum of Sudanese stakeholders abroad, including civil society, activists, humanitarians, women’s groups, youth, and political parties, to hear their perspectives on bolstering aid, ending the conflict, and achieving a democratic transition in Sudan.
