U.S. envoy backs civilian role in Sudan’s peace talks

March 13, 2024 (ADDIS ABABA) – The Coordination of Civilian Democratic Forces (Taqaddum) and the new US Special Envoy to Sudan, Tom Perriello, met in Addis Ababa on Wednesday. Both sides agreed that it is important to include civilian voices in efforts to end the ongoing conflict.

Currently, peace talks mediated by the US and Saudi Arabia (Jeddah process) only involve the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces. Similarly, the IGAD initiative aims for a two-phase approach, focusing on military arrangements before civilian participation.

Taqaddum presented their roadmap for peace, emphasizing the need for a unified international effort that actively includes civilian stakeholders in negotiations. They also advocated for excluding the dissolved National Congress Party, the Islamic Movement, and their affiliates due to their past role in destabilization.

According to a statement released by Taqaddum, Perriello expressed strong support for the Sudanese people’s desire for peace. He actively listened to their proposals to end the war, build sustainable peace, and restore a democratic, civilian-led government.

Perriello urged all parties to work towards an immediate ceasefire, address the humanitarian crisis, and engage in good-faith efforts to establish a democratic, civilian-led government reflecting the will of the Sudanese people.
