Sudanese army captures strategic Wad al-Bashir bridge in Omdurman

March 14, 2024 (OUMDURMAN) – The Sudanese army made significant progress in its ongoing conflict with the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) by seizing control of the strategically important Wad al-Bashir Bridge in western Omdurman on Thursday.

Sudanese army soldiers documented their capture of the bridge in video clips, expressing their intent to push further towards Souq Libya and the Dar es Salaam neighbourhoods. RSF troops and allied militias are currently heavily present in these areas.

The Wad al-Bashir Bridge is crucial in supplying the RSF. It connects Omdurman’s old quarters with Um Badda locality, offering access to the “Omdurman-Bara” road, a vital route for RSF reinforcements and supplies from western Sudan.

Throughout the past month, the Sudanese army has engaged in intense battles within Omdurman’s old neighbourhoods. These clashes have resulted in several victories for the army, culminating in the expulsion of RSF forces from the city centre.

Most recently, on March 12th, the armed forces successfully captured the radio and television headquarters located east of Omdurman. This victory came after fierce fighting against the RSF, who reportedly sustained significant casualties in both personnel and military vehicles.
