Sudanese army repels RSF attack in Al-Faw

March 18, 2024 (GEDAREF) — On Monday, The Sudanese army announced that it had repelled a Rapid Support Forces (RSF) attack on Al-Faw in Gedaref state, eastern Sudan. This marks the third front of clashes this week, alongside ongoing battles in Khartoum North and West Kordofan.

In a statement, the army said its forces in Al-Faw’s Major 5 area “crushed the enemy militia,” inflicting heavy equipment and personnel losses on the RSF. They claim to have destroyed and captured several RSF vehicles, with dozens of attackers reportedly killed.

Activists report two army casualties alongside the destruction of five RSF vehicles out of the 20 involved in the attack. They also claim the capture of five additional vehicles before the RSF retreat.

The RSF maintained sporadic attacks on Al-Faw from Al-Jazirah State, an area they seized late last year.

Colonel Ibrahim Al-Houri, former editor-in-chief of the Armed Forces newspaper, stated that the army heavily shelled the RSF attackers in Major 6. Drones also participated in the battle, destroying RSF artillery and vehicles.

Analysts believe the RSF attacks aim to distract the ongoing military preparations in Gederaf and other states to attack their forces in Al-Jazirah.
