UAE rejects Sudan’s allegations at UN Security Council

March 23, 2024 (NEW YORK) – The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has rejected accusations made by Sudan at the United Nations Security Council, accusing the Gulf country of supplying weapons and ammunition to the Rapid Support Forces(RSF) that have been fighting the Sudanese for nearly a year.

In a letter to the Council President, Mohamed Abushahab, the UAE’s Deputy Permanent Representative, addressed comments from Sudan’s representative, saying that this support violates the arms embargo on Darfur.

In his letter, seen by Sudan Tribune, Abushahab refuted these claims, stating that the UAE “deeply regrets the false allegations” and emphasizing the country’s commitment to the sanctions regime. He added that the UAE has provided “comprehensive information” to the UN panel of experts monitoring the sanctions, demonstrating transparency and cooperation.

The letter also highlighted the “deep and long-established relations” between the UAE and Sudan. Abushahab reiterated the UAE’s stance on the ongoing crisis in Sudan, calling for “de-escalation” and a “return to the political process.” He pledged the UAE’s continued support for efforts to resolve the conflict.

In their report to the UN Security Council, the experts said they received credible reports of weapons being smuggled from Chad to Sudan’s RSF. According to the report, cargo planes unloaded weapons at an airport in Chad, which were then transported by truck to the Darfur border and handed over to the RSF. The weapons were then distributed in Darfur or transported to Khartoum.

The panel contacted Chad and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) about these findings. The UAE denied involvement and said their flights carried humanitarian aid. Chad hasn’t responded yet.

Several reports by international media highlighted the UAE’s support for the Sudanese paramilitary forces, which are accused of war crimes, atrocities and grave human rights violations.
