SLM-MM senior commander in Atbara to coordinates Darfur aid delivery

SLA-MM Deputy Commander Jaber Ishaq (L) received by the group's officers after his arrival in Atbara

March 23, 2024 (ATBARA) – The Sudan Liberation Movement, led by Minni Arko Minawi, announced on Saturday the arrival of the Deputy Commander-in-Chief of its forces to the city of Atbara in the Nile River State, northern Sudan, to coordinate the delivery of humanitarian aid to those affected by the military conflict in the region.

On Thursday, the Rapid Support Forces objected to routes specified by the governor of Darfur, in agreement with United Nations agencies, to deliver humanitarian aid to the residents of the region via Al-Dabbah in the northern state, and spoke of a plan to transfer weapons to the army in the city of El-Fasher.

A statement issued by the Sudan Liberation Movement said, “The Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Sudan Liberation Army Movement and member of the leadership body of the joint force of armed struggle movements, Jaber Ishaq, arrived in the city of Atbara, coming from the capital of the Darfur region – El Fasher.”

At the entrance to the city of Atbara, Minawi’s military official received Lieutenant General Abdullah Bishr Jalli, Commander-in-Chief of the Gathering of Sudan Liberation Forces led by Al-Tahir Hajer, and a number of leaders of the armed movements who are gathering in the “Al-Ma’aqil” camp.

The statement explained that the Deputy Commander-in-Chief’s visit to Atbara came at the request of the General Supervisor of the Joint Force and the Governor of the Darfur Region, Commander Minni Arko Minawi, to arrange and coordinate some matters related to humanitarian affairs and how aid arrives.

The official authorities in Sudan refuse to deliver aid to Darfur through the El Geneina crossing in West Darfur state, which is controlled by the Rapid Support Forces, considering that they will use it to enhance their influence over the people of the region.

The failure of aid to reach Darfur led to the emergence of famine in large areas of the region, especially residents of displaced camps.
