Kiir is the SPLM sole candidate for 2009 presidential elections: Official

August 27, 2008 (WASHINGTON) – Luka Biong, minister of presidential affairs in the Government of Southern Sudan (GoSS), said that First Vice President Salva Kiir Mayadrit is the definitive candidate of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) for the next year presidential election.

Speaking with Sudan Tribune from Washington where he is attending the conventions of the Republicans and Democratic parties, Biong underlined statements attributed to him about the Kiir’s candidacy for the presidency had been misunderstood.

Last week, a correspondent of Ajras Al-Hurriya daily newspaper quoted the close aide of Kiir as saying that the SPLM Political Bureau has yet to make a final decision about who would be the SPLM candidate for the president in 2009 election.

“I was speaking in general terms about the procedures observed by the party when times come to designate the contenders for the whole elections not only the presidential but also the legislative and governors and the states chambers” he said.

Biong said he had explained that the SPLM being a national political force has to pick its candidates at all levels of government. He also explained that a special committee is dedicated to deal with this issue.

“The issue was never about President Kiir who is head of the SPLM and our legitimate candidate” he said.

The second convention of the SPLM held last May in Juba adopted a resolution that its chairman should run for the presidency of the republic next year.

The SPLM Secretary General, Pagan Amum last week cleared doubts on Kiir’s candidacy saying he is the sole candidate for the presidential election.

Luka Biong also said the SPLM is striving to be a “force of change” in the country by promoting fair distribution of wealth as well as providing healthcare, education and development to the marginalized and middle class people.

The SPLM official also called on Sudanese political parties to admit past faults and apologize for crimes they had committed as did the First Vice President and SPLM Chairman during the celebration of the third anniversary of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement in Wau last January.

Yes Kiir is the sole candidate but as a leader of political party running for next year elections his voices are nowhere to be heard in regard to what is currently happening in Darfur. Only Alor from SPLM that responded to the two days ago massacre of Sudanese citizens by Sudan force in Kalma camp. Kiir should have been the first person to respond to such heinous atrocities perpetrated against Sudanese citizens.

I am so anxious about Kiir’s leniency/naivety towards Bashir’s regime. This lenient stance will let down SPLM during elections if not revitalised. These atrocities should have not been happening in his eye with out apparent publicly denunciation. I don’t think that Kiir would boldly face the regime in the next year elections. I can only see subordinate members such as Pagan, Yasir and Alor as the only icon battling with the regime of which Kiir should be the first to challenge Bashir’s cruel and undemocratic bureaucracies.

The so called democratic change can not be achieved with out vehement opposition of undemocratic acts.

    CANDIDACY CAN BE CONFUSING.
Keeping voters in dilema or confusion of wether or not u r standing for any kind of position can make u end up with swing votes.

I wonder what takes SPLM long to start their campaign point-blank…by letting Kiir himslef declare he is standing.

In most of the countries I hv witness that each candidate declares his/her status in a year or two early so that people can feel the change he/she can bring.

Or do they xpect it will be Automatic vote in for Kiir.
U need to win yr enemies heart inorder to live at home.

    We needs Northener’s vote too.

We can’t win and lead alone…unless it’s for Junup Sudan that he is standing for.

Don’t get me wrong fellas, but I think 4 months isn’t enaf for the whole country to trust yr politics unless u sweet talk them in.SPLM has alot of work to do to convince people to stand with them in this general election…they need 2 clear their tail from Corruption alligations, slow implementation alligations, lack of capacity alligations, and in Politic itself they need SO MUCH MORE!!!

I am HAPPY tho’ that they are attending the Democrates/Republican Conventions in the U.S.A that will give them an xperience of how to do campaigns.(God,imagine the confident the voters hv in OBAMA and MCAIN)

Before those of internet worriers i would like to add few advice.

Mr president Kiir, this is a Wise move i absolutely agree to see Kiir heading us into a big challenge, but one thing i would like to talk about is out standing issues across Sudan, durfur,Nuba Mt,Eastern Sudan and Abeyi halfway. In this point of mine i would like our president of South Mr Kirr to ensure that before we approach 2009 i would to see that he has done better contribution to those areas as i have mention above, why?because this is a real move of ensuring that we as Southerners we are capable of bringing a fruit of joy to every Sudanese regardlesss of our genda, race and religion, also to show that we care about our nation of Sudan in generally. And also i would expect to see that Mr Kiir is tight with NCP apart from ICC but in regard to what they had agree on during the CPA.However in many aspects i can see that some people in South includes leaders are not in good mood for Kiir to ran for on coming election and this is obvious to everyone execpt if your illogic in your view, but in my own advice i would like to say that please Southerners more opportunities are coming, but the only way to reach those opportunities is be proude of kiir as our leader and lets stand with strong mind and courage as one single family of SPLA/M and Southerners who had joined hands for 21 years to bring the fuit of joy, freedom and democracy.

    PEACE TO ALL !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
