Temporary base in Lakes State fully operational, says UNMISS
April 2, 2024 (NEW YORK) – The United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) said the recently established temporary base in Maper, Lakes State, is fully operational and peacekeepers are regularly patrolling across Rumbek North county.
The base, a spokesperson for the Secretary General said, is critical given a spike in cross-border communal tensions between Lakes and Warrap states last year.
The temporary base, UNMISS stated, aims to boost civilian protection, facilitate safe delivery of humanitarian aid, and create a secure environment to help address root causes of longstanding grievances among bordering communities.
The UN Mission Force Commander, Mohan Subramanian recently visited the temporary base where he reportedly met state and county authorities, South Sudanese uniformed personnel and the peacekeepers currently stationed there.
He emphasized that the mission was committed to protecting civilians and noted the need for collective efforts to address the root causes of conflict between neighbouring states, particularly as South Sudan approaches elections.
According to the force commander, the establishment of the temporary operation base in Maper aims to enhance security and protect civilians residing between Rumbek North of Lakes State, Unity and Warrap States of South Sudan.
“Maper is situated at the junction between Lakes, Unity, and Warrap States. This area has been a major concern in terms of security for quite some time. We have conducted extended patrols in the area, attempting to maintain control and security,” he stressed.
