Egypt, U.S. discuss ceasefire efforts in Sudan, upcoming humanitarian conference

April 3, 2024 (CAIRO) – Egyptian and American diplomats met on Sunday to discuss the ongoing conflict in Sudan. They focused on achieving a ceasefire and restarting peace negotiations.

The Egyptian Foreign Ministry said Ambassador Hossam Issa, Director of the Department of Sudan and South Sudan, met with U.S. Special Envoy to Sudan Tom Perriello and U.S. Ambassador to Egypt Herro Garg.

According to a statement issued by the Egyptian foreign ministry, the discussions centred on efforts to stop the bloodshed and ensure the safety of Sudanese civilians. Both sides emphasized the importance of a ceasefire and a return to dialogue, as well as the possibility of establishing humanitarian corridors to deliver essential supplies to those affected by the conflict.

The meeting also highlighted the crucial role of Egypt and neighbouring countries in supporting Sudan during this crisis.

Furthermore, the discussions touched upon preparations for the upcoming international humanitarian conference on Sudan, scheduled for April 15th in Paris. The conference is expected to gather broad participation from countries involved in Sudanese peace efforts, international donors, and organizations.

Both Egypt and the U.S. agreed to maintain communication and collaboration in the coming days, aiming to provide all possible support to help Sudan navigate this critical juncture.
