UN’s DiCarlo calls for collective action to end Sudan fighting

April 20, 2024 (NEW YORK) – New York – U.N. political affairs chief Rosemary DiCarlo called for collective and coordinated international efforts to end the fighting in Sudan, underscoring the shared responsibility to protect Sudanese.

At the UK’s request, the Security Council discussed the situation in Sudan one year after the outbreak of the war on Friday, April 19. Rosemary DiCarlo, Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs, Edem Wosornu, Director of Operations and Advocacy, Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, and Mohamed Ibn Chambas, Head of the African Union High-Level Panel on Sudan, briefed the meeting.

Speaking about the ongoing clashes across Sudan, she condemned the external actors who provide material support to the warring parties. “These external actors continue to flout the sanctions regime imposed by the Council to support a political settlement, thereby fueling the conflict. This is illegal, it is immoral, and it must stop.”

She further underscored the need to redouble efforts to achieve peace in Sudan. She described the Jeddah platform as “a promising vehicle” for dialogue between the warring parties to achieve an agreement on a ceasefire and related transitional security arrangements.

“We hope that it will be reconvened in the coming weeks,” she stressed without further details.

The senior international official welcomed the outcome of the international humanitarian conference for Sudan organized in Paris on April 15 by France, Germany, and the European Union.

She underscored that the Paris conference emphasized the need for unity of purpose and action among peace initiatives for Sudan.

“To this end, the Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy has proposed the convening of an inclusive meeting to develop a comprehensive mediation and peace-making strategy,” she underscored.

We must build on the momentum of the Paris conference to boost our efforts to help end the fighting and return Sudan to a path towards inclusive democracy and recovery.

This is a shared responsibility, she insisted.
