Sudan spars with online criticism over Saudi Arabia
May 6, 2024 (PORT SUDAN) – Sudan’s Foreign Ministry distanced itself on Monday from comments critical of Saudi Arabia by some Sudanese writers and activists.
Tensions rose recently after a video emerged showing Rapid Support Forces (RSF) celebrating military training in southern Saudi Arabia. This sparked criticism from figures associated with the Islamic movement in Sudan.
The Foreign Ministry, in a statement, said it had observed “writings and social media commentary on Sudanese-Saudi relations that do not reflect the official position of the government or the people towards the leadership and people of the Kingdom.”
The statement emphasized its disapproval of “harsh criticism directed at the Saudi leadership” and language deemed disrespectful. It stressed the Sudanese tradition of politeness towards “brothers,” particularly leaders of “sister countries.”
Writer Abdel Majid Abdel Hamid was singled out for accusing Saudi Arabia of betraying Sudan’s sacrifices in the “Decisive Storm” operation. He also criticized alleged incitement campaigns by the RSF broadcasted from Saudi territory.
Discontent further escalated over rumours, spread by a Saudi activist, that Saudi Arabia had detained a weapons shipment destined for Sudan. The Sudanese army has not commented on these allegations.
The Foreign Ministry underscored the importance of Sudan’s relationship with Saudi Arabia, citing religious ties, shared language, and common interests. It appealed to “opinion-makers” and social media users to avoid actions that could damage relations with Saudi Arabia and other friendly nations.
Saudi Arabia has clarified that the RSF training video is outdated and did not involve artillery, marching, or medical training.
