UN chief warns of Sudan’s devastating conflict, urges global action
May 10, 2024 (NAIROBI, Kenya) – In a powerful address ahead of the UN Civil Society Conference, Secretary-General António Guterres slammed the escalating violence in Sudan, calling for immediate action from the international community.
Guterres expressed grave concern about the war’s impact on civilians. “Sudan is witnessing indiscriminate attacks, horrific sexual violence, and the deliberate targeting of aid workers,” he stated. He highlighted the alarming displacement, with nearly nine million forced to flee their homes.
With the World Food Programme warning of a potential famine in Darfur, Guterres warned that the El Fasher clashes would further hinder aid. “An attack on the city would be catastrophic, potentially engulfing all of Darfur in conflict,” he cautioned.
The UN Secretary-General demanded all parties respect international law, protect civilians, and allow full humanitarian access. He expressed concern over escalating violence in North and South Kordofan, and Al Jazirah.
Emphasizing the lack of a military solution, he called for a unified international effort to push for a political process. He further welcomed regional and international initiatives, including those by IGAD, the African Union, the Arab League, and the Jeddah process.
Global action needed for lasting peace
“The UN, led by my Personal Envoy Ramtane Lamamra, remains committed to working with all actors to facilitate a lasting peace owned by the Sudanese people and spearheaded by the region,” Guterres declared. He urged all countries to exert influence to bring the warring parties to the table.
Reiterating the UN’s commitment to peacebuilding in Africa, Guterres concluded, “Global challenges demand global solutions. The UN will continue to fight for a better future for Africa and all humanity.”
