Sudan blames UN Security Council member for inaction on Darfur atrocities
May 11, 2024 (PORT SUDAN) – Sudan’s Foreign Ministry lashed out at the international community’s failure to address the ongoing violence in Darfur, particularly commending Human Rights Watch (HRW) for its condemnation of global inaction.
The Ministry’s statement, issued Saturday, specifically targeted a permanent member of the UN Security Council, accusing them of obstructing effective action against the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
The statement welcomed a recent HRW report documenting “ethnic cleansing practices” by the RSF in West Darfur. The Ministry cited the ongoing El Fasher clashes as proof of the RSF’s disregard for calls to halt attacks by UN officials and Western leaders.
UN Secretary-General Guterres echoed similar concerns on Friday, highlighting the war’s devastating impact on civilians. He condemned indiscriminate attacks, sexual violence, and the targeting of aid workers, adding to the nearly nine million displaced Sudanese.
The Foreign Ministry argued that the RSF’s continued aggression stems from the international community’s failure to impose serious sanctions on the RSF and their supporters. Additionally, the statement pointed fingers at a “regional sponsor” for supplying the RSF with weapons and a permanent Security Council member for obstructing effective action.
Sudan previously accused Britain, a permanent member and penholder on Sudan the UN Security Council, of hindering discussions on a complaint filed against the United Arab Emirates for alleged support of the RSF.
