UN warns of Sudan’s “tipping point” as El Fasher Violence escalates

May 13, 2024 (UNITED NATIONS) – The UN’s humanitarian chief, Martin Griffiths, issued a stark warning Monday about Sudan, calling it a nation “at a tipping point” amid worsening violence in El Fasher, North Darfur.

In statements released on social media, Griffiths, the Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, stressed that the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has repeatedly communicated strategies for protecting civilians to all parties involved in the conflict.

“The UN now expects them to do what the world and international humanitarian law expect,” he declared, urging immediate action to prevent further bloodshed.

The UN official highlighted the dire situation in El Fasher, a city of 800,000 civilians caught in the crossfire. Healthcare facilities are under threat, and the city’s Southern Hospital faces critical shortages of medical supplies.

Griffiths’ statement follows reports of escalating violence in El Fasher, raising fears of a broader humanitarian catastrophe.
