No resumption date set for Sudan military-paramilitary talks

Sudanese foreign minister Hussein Awad meets his Saudi counterpart Faisal Farhan in Manama on May 14, 2024

May 15, 2024 (PORT SUDAN) – The Sudanese Foreign Ministry said no date has been set for resuming talks between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces on the Jeddah platform.

Following a meeting between Sudanese and Saudi officials on the sidelines of the Arab Summit on Tuesday, a Sudanese official confirmed to Sudan Tribune that no date has been set.

The Saudi Foreign Minister, Prince Faisal, reportedly emphasized the need to restart negotiations as a step towards a political process, expressing concern about ongoing tensions.

Military sources speculate talks might resume by the end of May or after Eid al-Adha. Meanwhile, U.S. Special Envoy Tom Perriello stated the army and RSF haven’t shown willingness for immediate talks despite invitations.

International and regional mediators are working to broaden the negotiation table beyond military parties. They aim to include civilian groups, professional bodies, and civil society, according to “Sudan Tribune” sources.
