SPLM Secretary General quits Sudan’s national cabinet

September 14, 2008 (KHARTOUM) — Sudanese president, Omer Al-Bashir today evening has relieved Pagan Amum of his position as minister of cabinet affairs. He also appointed Costa Manyebi at his position.

Pagan Amum
Pagan Amum
Panan, who is also the Secretary General of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement, quits son ministerial post after a row with the National Congress Party when he stated that Sudan is a “failed and corrupt state”. He also had to resign from his ministerial post to work for the party.

The SPLM official made the remarks during a forum on press and political freedom in Sudan organized by the pro-SPLM Freedom Bells, Agras al-Huriya last June. NCP officials like Nafi Ali Nafi criticized Pagan and called on him to resign.

However Pagan dismissal comes also as result of a new constitution adopted during the SPLM convention last May where the SPLM Secretary General should dedicate all his time to the party and not to occupy another executive function.

The SPLM leadership; following a meeting held in Khartoum and headed by the first Vice president, condemned the attacks against Pagan Amum and calls to relieve him after his statements.

Since, Pagan didn’t take part in any cabinet meeting and moved to Juba where he remained for a while. Also the SPLM Secretary General filled his resignation to the First Vice President and asked to replace him.

However one month later, in July, Al-Bashir issued a decision lifting the constitutional immunity of Pagan Amum. He also ordered the formation of a commission of inquiry with Amum on his political statements.

The decision was due to remain confidential but it was published by some medias favourable to the National Congress Party. Pagan had never met the commission of inquiry. But the incident illustrated the bad and difficult relations he has with NCP leadership.

President Al-Bashir also appointed George Bioring Mayan as Minister for Investment to replace Costa Manyebi and Peter Adock as Minister for Higher education.

Also the president issued another decree to appoint Ali Majok Al-Mumin as a State Minister for Cabinet Affairs. Al-Mumin will replace the leader of the Sudan Liberation Movement – Free Will faction, Abdel Rahman Musa Abakar who died last August.

This is the wise political move to SPLM and people of south Sudan by the honorable secretary General Mr. Pagan Amum to quit the political beggaring being played in Khartoum by unholy government led by war criminals who are not ready to understand the true nature of the justice and democracy though there are some echoes which are sounding the same in the name of democracy. President basher and his hierarchy are terrorist wanted for crimes against humanity therefore it will impossible for the person who assume the position to work for the suddenness to sit and watch while basher and his men are butchering the citizens in both south and Darfur. For the political reasons, I personally agree with the resignation of General Amum to come back to south and watch with full attention to government of south rather then being divided between north and the south like what President Kiir is doing though he is the puppet in Khartoum palace.

It is true removal of Hon.Pagan Amum from his ministerial position may have its pollitical implications, but we should also know that the position of of SPLM secretary general of Sudan is a very big snd sensitive position that can not be double with another position. Hon.Pagan should work to establish SPLM head quater in Juba and double his effort with his deputies and the party secretaries to establish proper SPLM offices at all the levels of the governmnet structure and to begain a compaign for the coming elections. SPLM is still need alot of work at the grass roots levels. What is a ministerial position in Khartoum with out strong foundation.

Pagan Amum is real freedom ! I like how he speaks his mind for the rights of marginalized Sudanese especially southerners. I hope he will continue advocating against the NCP ‘s ill intention of trying to dishonor the CPA.

That cabinet is full of war criminals wanted by the ICC and it doesn’t matter if Pagan isn’t in it. He is much more efficient as movement’s secretary general!

Pagan Amum did not quit as others are seeing it but he was dismissed by NCP. This is a big blow to SPLM and also humiliation. The boy did not know how to keep is big mouth shout. He was always keep his nose up as if he was above everybody. These are type of people who will make SPLM unpopular. Let him go back to Juba to drink more whisky and keep his mouth shout. He is not even useful to be SPLM secretary.

Who are you to relieve Pagan from his duties? I think you are more crook than Amum. As a matter of fact we shall relieve you from interacting with us through this media site. We are nationals who should say sensible things not those who just vomit when they have overeaten at the village level. It is true for you because you are a Bashir’s sycopant who only takes him as god and everything he does is holy to you. Who knows you may be among lured guys who have been electrically stamped at their groins by Bashir as a symbol of total support for NIF and NCP. I am saying this becauase I need you to come back to south and think as wise as other southerners. Do not sell your right on what you deserve.

The statement’Sudan is a failed and corrupt state’ as stated clearly by the SPLM General Secretary Pagan Amum seems provocative to ‘jaalaba’boys but it is a proven reality and because of Islamic horrible Democracy that works only for few hours a year,Mr.Pagan has been forced to resign as a cabinet Minister in GONU,something Kharoum calls a relieve on Pagan but in fact, Pagan is needed more in the Splm General HQS in the south than being needed in GONU,so there is a common interest in Pagan’s ‘ignited’ resignation from both ends North and the South sudan. Those ‘jaalaba’ Big boys like Taah, Nafia and the ‘Guess’ are happy about the situation they have designed and propagated to the media forgetting that they are playboys in the sinking ship.By Garang Arok 20/9/2008.
