May 19, 2024 (JUBA) – Kenyan President William Ruto reiterated his commitment to facilitating a resolution between the South Sudanese government and political dissidents, stressing the importance of regional peace and stability.

President Ruto confirmed receiving a special message from South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir, delivered by Minister of Presidential Affairs, Joseph Bangasi Bakosoro. He commended President Kiir’s pursuit of lasting peace and a unified nation.

“Kenya values the steps South Sudan has taken toward peace and unity,” President Ruto stated on his official Facebook page. “A peaceful South Sudan strengthens our historical ties.”

High-level sources revealed that Minister Bakosoro, accompanied by South Sudan’s Ambassador to Kenya, Chol Mawut Unguec Ajongo, assured President Ruto and his administration of the South Sudanese government’s commitment to accelerating ongoing negotiations in Nairobi.

“President Salva Kiir is committed to peace,” a source disclosed. “This message reaffirms the transitional government’s dedication to national unity and expediting the peace talks, dispelling any doubts about their commitment to dialogue.”

Minister Bakosoro confirmed his presence in Kenya on a peace mission on behalf of President Kiir.

The visit follows a declaration by the government and opposition groups, committing to resolving political disagreements. The Nairobi Declaration, or Tumaini (Hope) Initiative, incorporates previous agreements signed since 2020 and marks the commencement of official Kenyan mediation under President Ruto’s leadership.
