South Sudan says livestock related insecurity more frequent

September 17, 2008 (JUBA) – The Government of Southern Sudan has resolved to accelerate all means necessary in finding a durable solution to ongoing livestock related insecurity in the region.
Discussing the issue on Wednesday in the cabinet, chaired by the Vice President, Dr. Riek Machar, the meeting observed that much of the rampant insecurity occurring in most parts of Southern Sudan revolved around livestock.
The Minister of Animal Resources and Fisheries, Dr. Festo Kumba in his presentation to the Council said livestock (cattle) rustling lead to frequent wars among various communities in the semi-autonomous region.
He also added that there are conflicts between pastoralists and agriculturalists because of movement of cattle and grazing in farms.
As the Minister concerned with livestock issues, Kumba initiated peace-building efforts amongst pastoralist communities, in collaboration with the Center for Peace and Development Studies (CPDS) of the University of Juba and the involvement of the Southern Sudan Peace Commission (SSPC).
The effort will also involve other relevant authorities at different levels of government as well as chiefs through conferences.
The resolution called for peace-building approaches on a scientific basis and directed the Minister to carry out research on factors that are possible causes of these cattle-related conflicts and to give recommendations on how to resolve them.
Development of pastoralist economy and diversification of economic benefits from livestock through education were said to be the basic solutions towards the solution.
Breakdown of law and order during the 21 years of war and negative aspects towards the use of cattle were also blamed for the cattle-related insecurity.

Please don’t take your eyes away from the main ball which is the development of the country. What economic deversification are you people taking about? Do you want to force farmers to give up cows for money/cassava or what is it about?
Please mind your own businesses, this is not what you should bring across our faces. Even Europe, USA, Canada or Australia still rear more animals than Africans, so stop lingering.

Brother James, I think you are aware about the on going deadly conflicts between the pastoralist communities and the pastoralist and the farmers all over the Southern Sudan not to mention the neighbouring countries.To brush out any attempt by the government for a possible solution to this chronic problem is not a good idea. What kind of development are you taking about when there is no peace among the communities.How can you compare the Cattle keeping in Southern Sudan with Europ or America? have you ever heard about cattle raiding by some communities in some of these nations? and what do you suggest as a solution to this problem? We should try our best to be part of solution to our problems but not as part of the problem.

I could see every participant of this website accept the nature of growth both menatlly and physically, yet everybody in this website fail to understand why your mental growth is progressively diminishing from month to month. Both Sudantribune and the members of the board have tried to offer you some phychiatric rehabilitation online, but none of us recieve positive respond from you. Now all we can do is to see you in pain heading downhill.
I always advise you to stop insulting others people’s tribes. For instant, if I said something wrong, please insult me than my entire tribe. The great people of Murle whom you normally lies your beer lips are far worthful than you who is in that condition.
The issue of cows should be address by Dinka, Nuer, Murle, Mundari and other eastern Equatorian tribes who have cows rather than you who have no any tiny knowledge about the cow. I am 100% sure you don’t even know whether the cow urinate at the back or around the belly, if so why don’t you just sharpen your hoe and the rake for your little cassava and yam garden and leave cattle keepers alone to handle their own affairs of which they were in fact borned of course to handle?
Though I respect Mr. Festo Kumba whom his names suggested to me his cultivication background, I still want to advise him to stay away from entering into a new carreer without preparatory courses. Let him try to inject his gardening ideas into groceries before he get heavy push from cattle keepers. God gave us those cows and we don’t want eskimos to come and stick their noise into our krals fences.
Please Mr. Logic help your cousin to stay away from there.
