AU Peace and Security Council expresses grave concern over Darfur situation
May 25, 2024 (ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia) – The African Union’s Peace and Security Council (PSC) reiterated the urgent appeal by the Chairperson of the AU Commission for the warring parties to reinstate the local truce that had previously spared El Fasher from major fighting and to lift the current siege on the city, which has led to increased suffering and atrocities against civilians. The council urged the parties to resume negotiations in Jeddah without delay.
The PSC convened its 1213th meeting on May 21, 2024, to address the deteriorating situation in Darfur, Western Sudan. Despite repeated calls for a ceasefire and return to negotiations, the council expressed deep concern over the ongoing conflict around El Fasher, North Darfur.
In light of the dire humanitarian situation, the PSC stressed the importance of ensuring humanitarian access to the affected populations in Darfur and across Sudan. The council voiced alarm over the imminent danger posed to civilians due to the escalating conflict and the rising risk of grave atrocities. It called upon the warring parties to withdraw from civilian buildings, institutions, and government establishments.
The African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights has been tasked with urgently investigating the human rights situation in El Fasher and other areas in Darfur. The commission is expected to report back to the council with recommendations on holding perpetrators accountable.
In collaboration with the newly appointed AU Special Envoy for the Prevention of Genocide, the AU High-Level Panel has been requested to develop proposals to address ongoing atrocities, prevent further escalation in Darfur, and create a plan for the protection of civilians.
The PSC reaffirmed its decision to send a field mission to Port Sudan to gather firsthand information on the ground and to express solidarity with the people of Sudan who are suffering due to the conflict. The council will remain actively engaged in monitoring the situation and seeking solutions to the crisis in Darfur.
