Embrace peace, South Sudan president urges citizens
June 1, 2024 (JUBA) – South Sudan President Salva Kiir has called on the country’s citizens to embrace peace and unity, saying they are key pillars for development.
He made the remarks during the swearing-in ceremony on Friday of the newly-appointed governor of Jonglei State, Mahjub Biel Turuk in the capital, Juba.
Turuk was appointed in a decree read on state television (SSBC) on Wednesday.
The governor vowed to work with local authorities to foster peace and security.
Before his appointment, however, Turuk was the chief whip of South Sudan Opposition Alliance (SSOA) in the Transitional National Legislative Assembly (TNLA). SSOA is an umbrella group of opposition parties participating in the transitional government of national unity. The alliance was formed by the parties and armed groups who signed the revitalised peace agreement in 2018.
South Sudan is under a transitional government created by the 2018 peace accord.
