UN Secretary-General condemns deadly RSF attack in Sudan’s Al-Jazirah
June 6, 2024 (NEW YORK) – UN Secretary-General António Guterres strongly condemned the reported attack by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in Wad Al-Noura village, Al-Jazirah state, Sudan, which reportedly killed over 100 people on June 5th.
In a statement issued by his spokesperson, Stéphane Dujarric, the Secretary-General urged all parties to the conflict to immediately cease attacks that could harm civilians or damage civilian infrastructure.
The Secretary-General expressed deep concern about the immense suffering of the Sudanese people due to the ongoing hostilities. He reiterated the urgent need for all parties to silence their guns and commit to a path towards sustainable peace.
The statement also highlighted the continued efforts of the Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy, Ramtane Lamamra, to advance peace efforts in Sudan. The United Nations remains committed to supporting international mediation efforts and working with all relevant stakeholders to bring an end to the conflict.
