June 13, 2024 (JUBA) – The Central Bank of South Sudan has released a notice informing the public of the issuance of a one thousand South Sudan Pounds (SSP) note.

A June 12, 2024 statement, bearing the signature of the Central Bank governor, James Alic Garang, cited the 2012 Parliament Act as the basis of the decision.

“The Bank of South Sudan informs the public that it has issued a banknote series one thousand South Sudan pounds (SSP1000). This issuance is in line with the Banking Act 2012 and the Bank of South Sudan Act 2023 (amended)”, partly reads the statement.

The Central Bank governor explained that the newly issued banknotes have the same principal characteristics as the previously issued banknotes of SSP1000.

He revealed a change in the wording of the new series to the South Sudan pound instead of the South Sudanese pound. Other specimens for the new series of the banknote remain unchanged.

The bank urged all financial and non-financial institutions to comply with the notice.

A banknote series is a collection of a nation’s banknotes in all available denominations that have been released within a limited time. The release of a new banknote series usually corresponds with the implementation of updated security features. When a new series is released, banknotes corresponding to the previous series are gradually taken out of circulation.
