July 1, 2024 (SINJAH) – The Rapid Support Forces (RSF) solidified their control over Sinjah, the capital of Sennar state in southeastern Sudan, on Monday, following reports of their eastward expansion.

Last Saturday, the RSF seized Sinjah after advancing from their Jabal Moya strongholds, located approximately 40 kilometres south of the city, utilizing dirt roads to bypass main routes. They swiftly took control of the army base and local government headquarters, with reports emerging of RSF elements looting property and intimidating residents.

The intensified fighting in Sinjah triggered a mass exodus of civilians from various areas within Sennar state, fleeing towards Gedaref in eastern Sudan.

Sources informed “Sudan Tribune” that the RSF’s control now extends over the entire city of Sinjah, including the headquarters of the Sudanese army’s 65th Brigade, which was abandoned by the armed forces who retreated to the city of Sennar.

Eyewitnesses reported that the RSF also secured the entrance to the Blue Nile Bridge, a crucial link between Sinjah and areas east of Sennar. This move suggests a potential eastward expansion towards Al-Dinder, a locality bordering Gedaref state.

RSF-affiliated platforms have disseminated videos showcasing a significant RSF presence throughout Sinjah.

Despite the RSF’s advances, the Sudanese army spokesman, Brigadier General Nabil Abdallah, stated on Sunday that the armed forces are still engaged in combat with the RSF in the Sennar state capital and remain committed to defending their positions within the city.
