SPLM-N declines Cairo meeting for peace in Sudan

Amar Amun speaks to Sudan Tribune on May 30, 2024

July 3, 2024 (KAMPALA) – The Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N) announced on Wednesday its decision not to participate in the Cairo conference scheduled for this weekend, which aims to narrow the gaps between political forces on comprehensive peace in Sudan.

Cairo intends to host the conference, which includes Sudanese civilian political forces, on July 6th and 7th, with the participation of relevant regional and international partners to discuss solutions to the crisis in Sudan.

Amar Amعn Daldoum, the Secretary-General of the movement headed by Abdelaziz Al-Hilu, told Sudan Tribune: “The movement declined an invitation to participate in the conference of political and civil forces scheduled to be held in Cairo early next week.” He added that the movement is reserving its reasons for non-participation.

Buthaina Dinar, the Vice President of the Revolutionary Democratic Current, also declined to participate in the Cairo meeting for the political forces on comprehensive peace in Sudan. She called on the Coordination of Democratic Civil Forces (Tagadum) to adopt a clear vision regarding the political process before participating.

Tagadum had previously announced its commitment to participating in the Cairo conference, aiming to play a significant role in the dialogue surrounding ways to end the conflict and bring peace to Sudan.

Groups from the Democratic Bloc allied with the Sudanese military and some political and intellectual figures will also attend this meeting.

The African Union plans to hold a similar meeting next week with the same political forces and similar objectives. Observers note the lack of coordination and repetition of the same agenda.،
