Sudan fails to reach an agreement with France over suspending Bashir indictment

October 7, 2008 (PARIS) — The Sudanese government failed to reach an agreement with France over conditions needed to suspend the indictment of president Omer Hassan Al-Bashir, a senior official said today.

Nafi Ali Nafi

Nafi Ali Nafi, senior Sudanese presidential adviser told reporters in Paris today that his country insisted that a suspension must prelude any steps to be taken by Khartoum. The French on the other hand said they want to see change on the ground before they will support an Article 16 resolution.

Nafi headed a Sudanese delegation to Paris for discussions with French officials on ICC crisis.

The French president has told reporters in New York last month made it clear that his country will not support a deferral resolution unless certain conditions are met.

“France wants the Sudanese authorities to radically change their policies. It is now up to Mr. Al-Bashir to determine what exactly he wants” Sarkozy said.

“We want to deploy the international force in Darfur to stop the scandalous situation in which tens of thousands are dying in this part of Africa. We want peace in Sudan as well as peace and the territorial integrity of Chad… people in Darfur have the right to live and we cannot accept the situation as it is currently” he added.

Sarkozy warned Sudan that France wants to see concrete steps taken before it would support a suspension of ICC move.

“There would be no recourse to invoking Article 16 unless there is radical and immediate change in Sudanese policies” he said.

“If Sudanese authorities do change; totally change their policies then France would not be opposed to using Article 16” the French president added.

In mid July the International Criminal Court’s prosecutor Luis Moreno-Ocampo filed 10 charges against Al-bashir: three counts of genocide, five of crimes against humanity and two of murder. It was only last week that judges have started reviewing the case in a process that could possibly drag on to next year.

    Thanks Zarkozy,

Those of Nafi are playing with the blood of people, pretending to the whole world that they are serious with bringing peace to the region, yet they go around to defy what is really expected of them to do so. Those of Zarkozy are not the AUs, NAM, Arab League, Russia, China, mention them who accept the usage of article 16 to be invoked yet Al-Bashir and his Cronies are relactant to protect it’s citizen, instead killing , raping and displacing them. What sort of defferal or suspension do you like the French Leader to support?. Shame on you. Things must be first realized on the ground before the time than other people around the world to work against ICC indictment.

Stop fooling yourselves to the extend of international leaders like Zarkozy who had embarrassed you Nafi. You aren’t of the Standard at international Arena. Just remain with your Islamic idealogies and extremism. Continue to kill more because your Allah will grant you more Graces in Heaven as you always preach. But remember that, he who kills by sword, will be killed by the same sword. Your days are coming to a deminishing point.

You will soon be missed or miss by Bashir or miss Bashir as we are waiting the pre-trial judges to come with an arrest warrant of your president. It will mark the end of your top position as even those Arabs in the north are fed up of your power dominion. People are only waiting the arrest warrant, hence your exit.

All must be arrested by Ocampo, including the ill advisor of the president to commit more atrocities, he who went to France recently with his image above.

    Thanks.

As a sudanese citizen i see the whole issues whether darfur issue or ICC, are related to each other.
Making peace in darfur doesnt come by international force only, there are the african forces or even the sudanese armed force who can deal with those rebels fighting against the government, nd they are reason why the situation is not stable in darfur.

And Dear mr. sarkozy, No one can change a policy of a whole country, placing pressure on the government to allow the international forces to enter the sudanese lands, because the government thinks that these forces are intelligence agencies actually that is what the government believe in, so they prefer the african forces.
And regarding the ICC, france can use the veto power for such type of decisions, but france shouldnt place any pressure on the government to accept the international forces inorder to use the veto to defer the ICC decision, because if the sudanese government didnt get any help from international community especially from USA,EU they may not deal with the ICC and this will lead to a serious catastrophe on the country and the peace process between the north and south.

So i think the possible solution for the darfur issue is that the UN and the greatest countries in the world help the african forces to settle in land and make peace and never allow the ICC decision to occur because this may halt all the peace process whether in darfur or south sudan.
