South Sudan’s Kiir meets RSF commander over oil security concerns
July 18, 2024 (JUBA) – Oil security concerns took centre stage in a meeting between South Sudan President Salva Kiir and Abdel Rahim Hamdan Dagalo, second in command of the Sudanese paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), on Wednesday.
South Sudanese officials revealed they have received credible information about potential RSF offensives targeting oil areas, specifically Heglig. This follows the abandonment of a military post in Abyei by the Sudanese armed forces, further heightening concerns.
Adding to the economic strain on South Sudan, the RSF leadership is reportedly demanding protection fees from oil companies and the government.
While it remains unclear whether an agreement was reached during the meeting, sources in the Ministry of Petroleum and Finance acknowledged previous payments to the RSF as part of a security arrangement to maintain oil flow in areas under their control.
The meeting, held off camera in Juba, included Ethiopian chief of general staff Birhanu Jula Gelalcha. It aimed to engage parties in the Sudanese conflict and promote a peaceful resolution.
Presidential sources revealed that President Kiir stressed the need for a peaceful settlement, allowing for mediation efforts and humanitarian aid delivery.
This meeting follows a series of engagements between RSF leadership and regional officials amidst escalating violence in Sudan, particularly in Sennar state.
This offensive has displaced civilians and cut off the White Nile and Blue Nile states, further exacerbating the humanitarian crisis.
