Sudan conflict forces closure of 45 community kitchens in Umbada
July 27, 2024 (UMBADA) – Volunteers in Sudan said on Saturday they had been forced to close 45 community kitchens in the Umbada area west of Omdurman due to a lack of funding.
The Rapid Support Forces (RSF) control most of Umbada, where food shortages are widespread due to the looting and destruction of markets, and power and communications outages that have lasted for over six months.
The Sudanese army, also, has been accused of preventing supplies from reaching areas outside its control in northern Omdurman, exacerbating the hardship for thousands of residents.
The Umbada Emergency Room said on its official Facebook page that “about 45 out of 50 free kitchens have stopped working due to the lack of financial resources.”
The closures in Umbada follow similar announcements by other aid groups in the region, who have cited financial difficulties and the army’s restrictions on the movement of food, medicine, and humanitarian aid in areas controlled by the RSF.
