Sudan coordinator condemns deadly attacks in El Fasher, North Darfur
July 29, 2024 (UNITED NATIONS) –The United Nations today strongly condemned indiscriminate attacks that occurred in El Fasher, the capital of North Darfur, over the weekend, resulting in dozens of civilian casualties.
Stéphane Dujarric, the spokesperson for the UN Secretary-General, relayed the condemnation from Clementine Nkweta-Salami, the Humanitarian Coordinator in Sudan. Local authorities reported at least 97 civilians killed or injured when a hospital and residential area were attacked.
“Ms. Nkweta-Salami called on the parties to stop the fighting and to do everything possible to protect civilians,” Dujarric said during today’s press briefing.
The UN spokesperson also highlighted the dire humanitarian situation in Sudan, with over 10 million people displaced within the country and across borders since the conflict began in April 2023. Despite the urgent needs, the 2024 humanitarian appeal for Sudan remains severely underfunded, receiving only $859 million out of the required $2.7 billion.
The UN continues to call for a cessation of hostilities and for all parties to respect international humanitarian law, ensuring the protection of civilians and unhindered access for humanitarian aid.
