July 29, 2024 (UNITED NATIONS) – UN Spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric has expressed confidence in the level of coordination between the UN’s ongoing efforts to resolve the crisis in Sudan and parallel initiatives led by the United States.
In response to questions regarding potential overlap and confusion arising from multiple diplomatic tracks, Dujarric emphasized a unified goal of alleviating the suffering of the Sudanese people.
The UN Special Envoy for Sudan, Ramtane Lamamra, convened proximity talks between conflicting parties in Geneva in July, followed by an invitation from the US Secretary of State for ceasefire talks in August.
When asked about the coordination between these processes, Dujarric confirmed close collaboration between Lamamra’s team and US counterparts, adding that the UN will have a presence at the US-Saudi convened talks in Geneva.
“Different actors in the international community have different pressure points, different roles to play, but everyone is working with the same aim,” Dujarric stated, dispelling concerns about the efficacy of various actors convening separate meetings.
He underscored the UN’s primary concern as relieving the humanitarian crisis in Sudan, citing recent examples of the dire situation on the ground.
The spokesperson’s remarks reflect a pragmatic approach to resolving the complex conflict, acknowledging the value of diverse international efforts while maintaining a unified purpose.
