South Sudan president warns against undermining peace

President Salva Kiir

July 30, 2024 (JUBA) – South Sudan President Salva Kiir has warned against undermining peace as the country prepares for its first post-independence elections.

He made the remarks as the country commemorated Martyrs Day on July 30.

“South Sudan’s independence did not appear out of nowhere as an instant achievement, but it came as a sacrifice from our gallant sons and daughters of our country who laid down their precious lives in liberating our countries, explained Kiir.  Our need long-lasting peace.  Let me reiterate, our desire for peace must be misconstrued as weakness rather it must be reciprocated for sake of economic well-being and people’s prosperity in the entire region”, said Kiir.

“I welcome the peace-loving nations across the globe to join me on this commemoration day”, he added.

The South Sudanese leader paid tribute to those who sacrificed their lives for independence and called for everlasting unity, peace and stability in the country.

Reflecting on the significance of Martyrs Day, Kiir highlighted the countless contributions made by some individuals during the country’s liberation struggle.

“Today, we stand in silence and observance to remember those who gave their lives for our independence and the prosperity of our land,” said Kiir.

He stressed that the hard-won independence was not an instant achievement, but a result of immense sacrifice, citing the contributions of veterans and martyrs.

Kiir described them as symbols of pride and hope for Africa’s newest nation.

During the occasion, the South Sudanese leader praised the resilience of South Sudan’s armed forces and the nation’s enduring spirit, encouraging citizens to cherish the values of July 30, which serve as a source of strength amid challenges.

Separately, Kiir praised the national basketball team for their achievements.

“Their success is a testament to our nation’s potential and spirit,” he stressed.

A former military commander, who now leads the world’s youngest nation, Kiir urged citizens to prioritize the nation’s future and strive for peace and prosperity.

“Let us work hard for our future generations,” he emphasized.

South Sudan gained independence in 2011 after a referendum in which its people voted overwhelmingly to secede from Sudan. Independence was the culmination of a long armed struggle waged by South Sudanese starting in the mid-1950s.
