SLM-Minawi to pose rebel demands for peace

October 18, 2008 — The Sudan Liberation Movement led by the former rebel chief Minni Minawi said today it intends to pose the demands of the rebel movements that rejected to sign Darfur Peace Agreement (DPA) in May 5, 2006.

The Sudanese government organises since last Thursday a forum to find out a national vision that could lead the government delegation to restore peace and stability in the troubled western Sudan. The rebel movements rejected to take part in this government organised meeting.

SLM Secretary for research and culture, Adam Ismail told the official SUNA in the sideline of Sudan’s People’s Forum that his party would discuss the demands that led the SLM- of Abdel-Whaid Al-Nur and the Justice and Equality Movement to reject Abuja Agreement..

Ismail further indicated they would pose the demands for a vice presidency for Darfur, the establishment of one region in Darfur, and the individual compensations.

During Abuja talks, the Sudanese government rejected the principle of individual compensations saying it only would be committed to the development of the region. Also it rejected the one region demand while said that the peace deal signed with the SPLM prohibits to modify the constitution0.

The SLM and JEM refused to sign the peace deal last year despite the important pressures exercise by the African Union and international community. They also rejected peace talks in Libya last Novemeber.
