Eritrean President meets Sudanese Communist leader

October 20, 2008 (ASMARA) — The Eritrean President held talks today with the Secretary General of the Sudanese Communist Party on the political situation in the country and ways to strengthen political partnership.

President Isaias Afewerki on Tuesday tackled with the visiting Mohamed Ibrahim Nugud the deteriorating political situation in Sudan and ways to settle Darfur crisis and to achieve implementation of the comprehensive Peace Agreement as well as the democratic transition in the country.

The meeting comes in the context of continuing political consultation that Eritrea conducts with various political forces in the Sudan to strengthen partnership, as well as exchange view on the different political issues.

The President Afewerki pointed that Sudanese problem could only be resolved through a comprehensive solution rather than on a partial basis.

He went on to say that a conducive ground and forum should be created that would enable all Sudanese political forces and opposition parties to develop a common vision.

The People’s Front for Democracy and Justice (PFDJ), Eritrea’s ruling party during the national liberation struggle period had close ties with the Sudanese Communist Party.

The SCP and the Popular Congress Party of Hassan Al-Turabi boycott a consultations conference taking place in Khartoum to develop a national vision to end Darfur crisis. The two parties and smaller political parties accuse the NCP of seeking to impose its own programme through the initiative.
