August 11, 2024 (EL FASHER) – The acting governor of North Darfur accused the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on Sunday of killing 28 civilians during their attack on the city of El Fasher the previous day.

Heavy fighting erupted in El Fasher on Saturday between the Sudanese army, allied armed groups and the RSF, with the paramilitary force briefly entering the city.

Activists accused the RSF of executing civilians in their homes, some targeted based on ethnicity.

“28 civilians were killed and 46 others wounded by RSF bullets,” Governor Al-Hafiz Bakhit said after visiting the injured at a hospital. He accused the RSF of committing massacres and deliberately targeting civilians.

The army said it had repelled the attack, inflicting heavy losses on the RSF.

“The army is capable of defending the homeland,” Bakhit said. “El Fasher will remain resilient and will soon be free of any rebel or traitor.”

Separately, the health ministry in North Darfur said the RSF shelled a hospital on Sunday evening, killing one person and injuring dozens.

El Fasher has been under siege by the RSF since April, and the paramilitary group has launched several unsuccessful attempts to take the city.
