U.S. to push for Sudan ceasefire despite government’s absence from talks

August 13, 2024 (GENEVA) – The United States will proceed with efforts to secure a humanitarian ceasefire in Sudan despite the Sudanese government’s refusal to participate in talks, U.S. Special Envoy for Sudan Tom Perriello said on Monday.

The Sudanese government declined to participate in the Saudi-Swiss-hosted talks in Geneva, citing the need to ensure the implementation of the Jeddah agreement of May 2023. They also voiced their objection to the UAE’s participation in the talks.

Perriello expressed disappointment with the Sudanese decision, stating, “We could accomplish far more if SAF (Sudanese Armed Forces) decides to send a senior delegation, as RSF (Rapid Support Forces) has already agreed to do.”

He also condemned the reported shelling of civilian targets by the RSF, calling the resulting deaths “unacceptable.”

“These alleged violations of international humanitarian law will be addressed in the upcoming negotiations in Switzerland,” Perriello said.

Despite the challenges, the U.S. remains committed to pursuing peace and humanitarian relief for the people of Sudan.

“The U.S. and our partners stand with the Sudanese people in pushing forward with all efforts to produce a cessation of violence and expanded humanitarian access now,” Perriello said.
