Three killed in Lakes state ambushes

October 26, 2008 (PARIS) – Three clans of Rumbek East and Central
counties clashed in Lakes state in Southern Sudan on Friday and
Saturday. Three people are reported killed as a result of different
ambushes.

Inter-clan fighting is one dimension of insecurity in Lakes state;
reports suggest that it also stems from deserters and divisions within
the Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA), a forcible disarmament
campaign, raiding from outside the state and political unrest in
Rumbek, the capital of Lakes state.

Dinka customary law in this region typically required a compensation
payment to relatives of 31 cows in cases of murder, although Governor
Daniel Awet Akot decided at the start of a disarmament campaign in
June that the payment should be raised to 51 cows. Awet cited the high
crime rate in Lakes state and the occasional killing of SPLA soldiers
by cattle raiders.

Allegedly, the fighting began when a man belonging to Panyon clan went
to Rumbek town with his bull. When his task in town was over, he was
composing out loud a new song as he was returning to the cattle camp
when an ambush was laid against him. He was gunned down by an unknown
man.

As soon as this news reached Panyon clan, immediately the Panyon youth
went out and attacked the Thiei clan, killing one man on the spot. The
same Panyon clan also attacked the Baar of central Rumbek, killing one
person. Panyon clans suspect Thiei, Nyan and Baar clans committed the
original deed.

The Baar clan is from the Dinka Agar found in Rumbek Central County
and the Thiei clan are from the Dinka Agar found in Rumbek East
County.

A Lakes state government official said that there are speculations
that these three clans of Rumbek Central and Rumbek East were
assembling Saturday in a group, preparing to attack, but Lakes state
police is controlling the situations by looking at both sides of the
incidents.

Jesus, look at this culture people are killing themselves just because of a cow, I don’t think that lake should be called a state, because it is now a devastating region in South Sudan, why do you drag ourselves back ward? what is the matter with your the people of lack knowledge, it is sad to see this frequent killing of our people just because of cattle and money in particular,i think you better come out from your jungle lives. You the governor of lack state don’t just consume money without doing your job, be strong to bring an end to this crazy behaviours in your state, why are you living with 18 century beliefs? you need to learnt how much a human worth not sticking to your cattle as your heaven.

Otherwise i recommand that the governor of lack state must be replace by a wise and capable man from Greater Equatoria not for long, but just to teach them how to manage the situation in lack state. Lack state need someone with full knowledge of govering a nation and having a diplomatic skills to discipline with those murderers. Please Mr president i request your excellence to take a teacher from Equatoria to teach the barbaric region of lack state, and they must not kill the Equatorian from giving them a lession, because it is always hard to deal with someone who does not deserve respect and tolerance. But to see them in peace we will do our courage as wise and brave people. Nothing is hard about those murderers in lack state, because it’s not hard

This tragedy is likely to emerge in to another war with time as politicians keep on engineering it. The mentallity of the citizens in lakes state is a conservative and non-understanding one. Just talking verbally with out any implemented modallities will not do anything. Officials suspected of politicising have to be brought to books if peace is to be realized in that state.

    First reason!

I think the Governor of Lake State has nothing to do with this killing or the so called inter-clan fighting in the state. I think the issue has to do with illegal arms in the hand of civilian or ex- soldiers in all states of South Sudan not only Lake. The best thing is that GOSS should collect arms been own by UN authorized people in the region. This should apply to every one regardless of who u are, so that the security can be control. Now a Governor can not control its people b’se each and every one has a gun to threat people at any time, this has made the citizen to take law in to their own hands leaving the authorities to have less control on them. So my advice to the President is that let the comprehensive disarmament be carried out at the same time to all citizen of the country who own arm illegally or otherwise the removal of Governors will bring no solution but to increase more killing or more lost of live.
