Lakes state SPLM Caucus calls for harmony in assembly

October 26, 2008 (PARIS) — The Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) party caucus in Lakes state held a meeting Saturday behind closed doors to address political tensions in the state.

At a roundtable shared by the SPLM chairperson and state governor, Daniel Awet Akot, the meeting brought together all SPLM cadre members serving in the Lakes state legislative assembly.

The meeting was closed to the press, but Sudan Tribune learned from an official SPLM source that Gordon Maper Manyiel was recommended to chair the SPLM Caucus in the legislative assembly, despite Manyiel’s earlier impeachment from this position in 2007. Manyiel was impeached after presenting a yearly human rights report, due to criticism from other MPs.

Since that time, Manyiel has played a significant role in the effort last month to impeach Lakes state Speaker Isaiah Alier Machinkok. Machinkok was removed by a coalition of legislators and executive branch officials, but Government of Southern Sudan president Salva Kiir Mayardit cancelled the move, saying that the procedure of impeachment was incorrect and reinstating Machinkok and his deputy to their respective position in Lakes state parliament.

All specialized committees of the assembly are dissolved and all appointments to the assembly business committees are going to be voted again according to county representation.

The other political parties must also be given positions in accordance with the interim constitution established by the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) of 2005.

Nine of eleven chairs of the assembly committees are held by SPLM members, as well as the positions for speaker, deputy speaker and leader of government business.

Following these determinations, the caucus also agreed to investigate allegations of corruption with public funds.

Governor Daniel Awet called for harmony with other political parties and peaceful coexistence in the Lakes state Assembly even as clan-based clashes have afflicted Lakes state government.

The state parliament will be officially opened on Monday morning without failure by Akot.

I appreciated the step that the Lakes State government took to solve its concerning issue without a press. A press is good anyway but it usually fuel the a problem even if it was a tiny thing. Moreover, there are some other government meetings that a reporter should not be allowed in; that is a meeting behind the closed door based on the sensitivity of its info. I am glad you did that. Frequency meetings of a government officials to present a bill, solve a problem, or sharing some ideas in the shortest way possible is better than leaving things to develop further.

Thank you Governor Awet for stepping up to initiate and solve what is seemed to break your state apart.

First of all I would like to thanks the person/persons who came up with this idea to conduct a meeting behind closed door because some times media reports can creat more disaster or draw attention to heald the problem.
However, I am not yet please with the government of the blessed and the princess of peace and tranquility of all, Lakes state Mahdiria el Bohrat RUMBEKthe way they are handling their minor problems to develop into a bigger problem which are currently going on.And infact these are happening in all ten states but the government control every thing not to grow further nobody is above the law. There is a very big QUESTION MARK on the governing of the state, why why all these crimes are happening every now and then and non of the responsibles are not brought to justies?
Like now it’d reached out to the foriegners sorry to mention this.I can say those who are behind in this distraction in Lakes State are not sons or daughters of the area.Their mission is just to dirtify the Holy land and they have forgotten that she was the one who brought this CPA into reality.May Almighty God bless Rumbek.

And for for you Big-Idiot Boy.you are really a child who grew up in foriegn country not even got time to sit down with elders or listen to those whom you are referring to be wise whatever you call them Equatorian to govern Lakes state where they got their higher education.By the way go back and make a reseach about this state proparely. Friends/brothers let ignore him,he is fixing nothing for whole southerners.( el khalif bedh boh wal jamal machi)
    Thanks
