Sudan’s Burhan takes control of border crossings amid aid push
August 20, 2024 (PORT SUDAN) – Sudan’s military leader Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan on Tuesday ordered the Sovereignty Council to take control of the country’s border crossings, a move aimed at streamlining humanitarian aid delivery amid the ongoing conflict.
The decision comes as Sudan prepares to open several border crossings to facilitate the flow of aid to those affected by the fighting. Al-Burhan recently approved the opening of the Adré crossing with Chad to address the dire humanitarian situation in Darfur.
A statement from the Sovereignty Council said the move was intended to “facilitate procedures across border crossings, ensure smooth commercial movement and speed up the clearance of goods.”
Currently, Sudan’s land and sea crossings are overseen by the Ministry of Transport. The country shares borders with the Central African Republic, Egypt, South Sudan, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Libya and Chad.
