August 22, 2024 (KAUDA) – The civil authority of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N) led by Abdel Aziz al-Hilu reported on Thursday 109 deaths from malnutrition across four counties in the Nuba Mountains and South Kordofan regions.

The SPLM-N declared a famine in areas under its control in South Kordofan and Blue Nile on Aug. 13. These regions are home to an estimated three million people.

Arno Ngutulu Lodi, First Secretary of the Civil Authority, told Reuters that the deaths occurred in Heiban (27), Rashad (62), Lagawa (11), and Um Dorein (9) counties.

He confirmed that Rashad county alone has 18,660 cases of malnutrition, primarily affecting children and the elderly. Data from other counties is still pending.

The SPLM-N refers to the areas it controls in South Kordofan State as the “Nuba Mountains Region” and those in Blue Nile as the “New Fung Region”.
