Clashes between rival RSF factions leave seven dead in North Darfur
August 27, 2024 (MELLIT) – Deadly clashes between rival factions of Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in the North Darfur town of Mellit have left seven dead and heightened tensions in the region, sources said on Tuesday.
The fighting erupted on Monday night when an RSF group from West Darfur attempted to loot the Mellit market, sparking resistance from local RSF members, eyewitnesses reported.
The incident resulted in the deaths of seven individuals from both sides and the destruction of two vehicles. Markets remain closed and residents have been confined to their homes as both factions continue to mobilize fighters and military equipment, sources added.
The clashes highlight growing internal divisions within the RSF, which seized control of Mellit in April after battles with armed groups that had previously secured the area.
Mellit, strategically located on the border with Northern state, serves as a key transit point for humanitarian aid and trade. The escalating violence raises concerns about further destabilization in the region.
The RSF has not yet commented on the incident.
