August 27, 2024 (KHARTOUM) – Sudan’s health ministry on Tuesday reported 1,223 cholera cases, including 48 deaths, across five states.

In Khartoum state, five suspected cholera cases were recorded in seven localities, though no new confirmed cases have been reported since the first one on July 23, a health ministry spokesperson said.

Additionally, 47 cases of conjunctivitis, or pink eye, have been reported across Khartoum, with most concentrated in Jabal Aulia, Karari, and Ombada. The spokesperson assured that the condition is self-limiting and patients typically recover within a week.

The ministry has also formed teams to investigate malnutrition cases resulting from misconceptions and reliance on a single food type. It is providing free nutrition services, including therapeutic food and support for pregnant women and children under five.

Efforts are underway to promote public health through guidance messages and community awareness campaigns on hygiene, disease prevention, and proper waste disposal.

The ministry is also chlorinating water in shelters, managing waste disposal, and conducting regular health checks for food and beverage workers.

A major environmental sanitation and disease vector control campaign was launched last week and will continue bi-monthly.
