Foreigners can obtain Sudanese citizenship after 5 years of residence

October 29, 2008 (KHARTOUM) — Interior Ministry has begun the implementation of new changes in the nationality law that grants Sudanese nationality for every foreigner legally resident in the country for more than five years.

The change comes amid the increasing demand for the Sudanese nationality. Previously the nationality law granted citizenship after ten years.

Director of the General Administration of Civil Registry explained that the law after the new revision grants citizenship by birth through the mother, and not only through the father as it was the case in the past.

In the nineties, Sudan granted for its citizens the right for dual nationality.

In the past, foreigners who apply for the Sudanese nationality are mostly for western Africa countries. However, recent immigrations are from Mali and Chad due to the drought, also recent flow of foreigners to the country for economic reasons includes Eritrea and Ethiopia.

The latest massive naturalization in the history of the country was conducted by the government of Ismail Al-Azhary at the end of the sixties before the legislative elections.

Next year the country will witness for the first time since 1989, the first general free elections for the presidency and parliaments at the national and states levels.

Bravo Bravo Al-BASHIR and your surrogates.
Everyone can understand your desperate need to increase the Arabs population in Sudan.

Lately you cruely invaded the Darfur region killing more than two hundred thousand civilians and desplacing multitude more all in the name of increasing the Arab population to pursue your selfish and improper political thirst. This could be seen from the effort you made in bringing in Arab Nomads from neighbouring CHAD and MALI to settle in the Darfur region giving no thought to the land owners. This is the same effort you are making in reducing the time for granting Sudanese Citizenship to foreigners from ten to five years and also through by birth from a mother which was not the case in the past.

Time will define your ambition as the spirit that raised you up moves from behind you and your people.

But for you Nomads, You should have known better Because, ‘if the man sold his fathers’ land to buy trumpet, where would he stand to blow it’? Al- Bashir will religuish power as his days are very much numbered and you would then know where you truely belong.

I feel you are not only greedy and rapacious like your host but you are also stupid to abandon what you have for what you don’t have and will never have.

    5 YEARS?
    This is rediculus!

    1. Which foreigner has been in the Sudan for five years while the CPA was sign just three yrs ago?

If not those foreigners who hv been in the North.

    2. Why talk about it now without discussing the constitution and laws of Sudan as a whole properly?

If not cos of Nxt year’s election.

    3. Why talk about Mali, Chad and western African countries alone?

If not cos of NCP’s interest to avoid Foreigners from East Africa in Southern Sudan not to register since they r less than 2 yrs in Junup.

Isn’t it cos they( NCP) wants to get more voters??

If not, then, There is something sinister in the offing about this ”New Nationality Law”

We have the ugliest record in this regard because of the back-door citizenship grants conducted by corruptive police officers to not entitled foreigners, women in particular. We hope that unwanted practice be taken inconsideration before reinforcement of the new legislations.
