New born among those killed in SAF airstrike in Central Darfur
September 2, 2024 (ZALINGEI) – At least five displaced people, including a newborn, were killed and three others injured in an airstrike conducted by the Sudanese Air Force (SAF) in the Central Darfur State capital, Zalingei on Saturday.
The incident occurred at the Khamsa Dagayeg camp for displaced people.
In a statement, The Darfur Displaced and Refugee Camps Coordination strongly condemned the attack, expressing concerns over the ongoing and escalating pattern of aerial and artillery bombardment targeting displaced communities.
The displaced people in Darfur, it said, have endured more than two decades of relentless suffering, leading to further casualties among vulnerable groups.
The Darfur Displaced and Refugee Camps Coordination, in the statement, also highlighted the indiscriminate shelling in the Abu Shouk camp and El Fasher in North Darfur, which has claimed the lives of hundreds of innocent civilians.
The Sudanese army, it stated, have systematically targeted civilians through aerial bombardments and heavy weaponry since 2003, forcibly displacing thousands from their homes and continuing these various forms of violations without reprieve.
The Darfur Coordination body called on the international community and the United Nations to take action by monitoring the situation in Darfur and Sudan in general.
It further argued that the imposition of a ban on military aviation in Darfur, is the only way to prevent further grave violations of human rights in the volatile region.
