Sudan demands answers from UNHCR over alleged RSF misuse of aid materials
September 4, 2024 (PORT SUDAN) – Sudan’s foreign ministry on Wednesday demanded an explanation from the U.N. refugee agency (UNHCR) after images circulated online appearing to show Rapid Support Forces (RSF) vehicles covered with UNHCR aid materials.
The ministry said its mission in Geneva had contacted UNHCR to draw attention to the alleged “serious violation of international humanitarian law and the United Nations Charter.”
Images shared widely on social media on Tuesday showed military vehicles covered with UNHCR-branded shelter materials, suggesting an attempt by the RSF to avoid airstrikes.
The ministry demanded an explanation for the incident and details of what measures UNHCR would take to prevent the “exploitation” of its name for military purposes.
In response to the allegations, UNHCR Sudan posted on X: “Any aid provided by UNHCR, worldwide, adheres to the humanitarian principles of impartiality, independence and neutrality, including in Sudan. We continue to urge all parties to respect international law and refrain from the seizure, diversion, delay, or misuse of humanitarian relief items.”
The RSF has been accused of looting aid organizations’ premises since the conflict in Sudan began in April.
In May, Sudan’s foreign ministry summoned the acting director of the World Health Organization’s office in Sudan after an RSF leader was seen wearing the agency’s official uniform.
